New features in upcoming release

As I have mentioned in my previous posts, I have been working on a new version of the GoalsOnTrack.com for the past 3 months. Everything is coming along pretty well, and I am planning to launch the new site before Christmas. The original plan was to launch by the mid-December, but it seems that there are just so many things to complete and the launch date has to be pushed back.

Anyway here are some of the new features in the next release, and I hope you will like them.

  1. Schedule tasks on dashboard – Now it is very easy to schedule your daily to-do list items. All can be done via a context menu on the dashboard. You can quickly change the due date of a tasks on dashboard to today, tomorrow, or later.
  2. View which goal a task belongs to on dashboard – Every task on your todo list on dashboard view will display which goal it belongs to. You will quickly know what tasks need to be done for all your goals for the day.
  3. Put a goal on the backburner – For those goals you find yourself not really making much progress, now you can choose to put it on the backburner and it will not show up on your daily dashboard, so that you can focus more on those goals which are more important.
  4. Upload inspiring pictures for goals – Now you are able to upload your own pictures for goals. The system provides a few default pictures for different type of goals, but you can add your own now.
  5. Goal dashboard – For people who like to concentrate on one goal at a time, now you can use the “Goal Dashboard”, which is different from general dashboard in that it only shows tasks for that goal only.
  6. Reports on progress and timesheet – A new set of reports are now availabe in flash animations, including both goal progress report and time usage report pie charts.

There are some other small improvements or features added here and there which will be available in the new release. If you have any suggestions or ideas, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

A new logo for the site

I’d like to share with you all a new logo I am considering to replace the current one with on GoalsOnTrack.com.

goalsontrack logo

This is how the logo looks like on different backgrounds. Since the new front end will probably have a blueish header, so the logo at the bottom will more likely be what it eventually looks like on the new site.

The logo tries to convey the concept of goals(big G), being tracked(dots), and time being tracked and managed, etc.

The logo was designed by my brother(thanks brother!), who is a very talented artistic person.

Personally I like the new logo very much. It looks much better than the current one. What do you think?

How to make best use of GoalsOnTrack

GoalsOnTrack was designed mainly for keeping track of the progress on your goals, by managing the tasks or action steps you take consistently towards achieving your goals. Therefore, the first thing you may want to think about is what kind of goals you want to track using the site.

GoalsOnTrack works best for the types of goals that you need to consistently complete tasks or take steps for. That is, there must be something you need to DO, as opposed to something you must be, or NOT do. For example, a goal like “quit smoking” may not work well in GOT, because the goal itself requires you to actually NOT do something. Same is true with goals like, “become more happy”, “eat less”, or “stay in shape”, unless you can find certain steps or things that you DO to help you move closer to your goal.

Another important feature of GOT is the time tracking. Personally I found most of people don’t get to accomplish their goals is simply because they don’t spend enough on them. We can be busy all day doing all kinds of things, but that may not help you really achieve your goal. The key is not how long you work or spend time on things, but rather how much time is really spent on working on your goals.

With GOT, it’s easy to track amount of time you spend on each of your goals. You only need to remember to use the timer clocks whenever you start or stop working on a task. The software will automatically record how much time you actually spend. You can even log out of the site when the timer is running, it will still remember the correct time amount.

There are some other interesting features which you may want to further explore. If you have any questions, or any idea on how the software can be improved, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Upcoming changes to GoalsOnTrack.com

It has been almost a month and a half since GoalsOnTrack website was launched. I have been working on a new version of the site, which includes a lot of improvements to the UI and some fixes to hidden bugs. I also have received  quite some great feedback from GOT users(over 1000 at the time of writing), thank you for all your great advice. I will graduatelly implement all the best features that you wanted into the coming revisions.

Here I posted a sneak peak of what new version of GOT will look like, please let me know if you like it or not.

In addition to the changes to the site itself, I will also need to have the introductary pages re-designed as well. I will also try posting more in the blog.  There seems to be a lot to do in the coming weeks. But it should be fun.

How to Effectively Track and Accomplish Your Goals

One of the most common reasons that people don’t get to accomplish their goals is that we tend to get distracted, and we lose track of important things that need to be done consistently in order to move forward towards our goals. Maybe you have set a perfectly achievable goal and planned every detailed step, but without effectively tracking your goal and knowing your progress, most certainly you will get discouraged when the first obstacle gets in the way and end up giving up on your goal eventually.

To really achieve any goal worthwhile, we need to discipline ourselves to keep it on track until it’s accomplished. There are several ways to effectively track your goals.

1. Review your goals regularly, preferably daily

Keep yourself constantly reminded of your goals by reviewing them at a specific time each day. It can be in the morning, first thing after you get out of the bed. It can be at night just before you go to sleep. Write down all your goals in a notebook, or store them in a computer software. When you review them, envision how accomplishing that goal will make you feel. Check your current progress, understand what you did to move it forward, find out what else you still need to do. By doing this regularly, you train your mind to become alert to things that  are related to your goals, and gradually your mind will automatically guide you to do whatever needed to achieve them.

2. Break down a goal into actionable steps

Many people tend to easily get overwhelmed by all the things they need to do to accomplish a goal. The trick is to break down a bigger goal into smaller actionable steps. For example, say your goal is to start your own business. There are many things you will need to do. But before spending too much time on thinking about how difficult or time consuming they will be, first break things down a bit. For instance, obviously first few steps towards your goal could be: decide an overall direction or business model, find a right product/service to sell, list requirements to make this product/service work, etc. If any of these steps still looks big, break it down further. Once you break it down to doable steps, all you need to focus on is just one small step. As long as you keep doing these small steps, the completion of the goal will take care of itself.

3. Break down a goal into quantifiable results

For some goals, it may not be easy to know what exactly the steps are to get started. How are you still able to keep track of your progress? One method is to find a measurable aspect of your goal, and write it down as a number. For example, your goal could be to lose weight, then the number is your body weight. If you want to finish reading or studying a book, the number is the number of pages to read. If your goal is to save money for a dream vocation, the number is the amount of money you put in a bank account. As long as you know what this number is, you will always know your progress. All that’s left is just to keep doing things that help you move that number closer to your goal’s end result, and stop doing what doesn’t change the number.

4. Track a goal by the amount of time you spend on it

There are certain kind of goals that can’t be easily broken down to definitive steps. It is often difficult to find any obvious measurable aspects for their end result. They can be goals, such as, stay in shape, have a peaceful mind, become more fluent in a foreign language, etc. For this type of goals, you can try tracking the amount of time you spend on doing things required by them. For instance, to stay in shape, track how many hours you work out per week. For having a peaceful mind, track how much time you spend meditating, or doing yoga per day. For becoming fluent in a foreign language, track how much time you spend practicing speaking the language per day. So on and so forth.

No matter what type of goals you set, you should always find something to track its progress. The benefit of doing this is that you will always know whether you are making progress or not. If you are, you will feel encouraged and become confident that your goal is reachable. If you aren’t, you will know immediately that what you are doing isn’t working for you, and it isn’t moving you any closer to your goal. Then you adjust your plan and find something else to try, until you have found the right way to do things that will eventually achieve your goal.

Setting and achieving your goal shouldn’t be that hard once you have learnt how to effectively track your progress. All you need to remember is to review your goals regularly, break things down into manageable steps, make it measurable and finally track your time working on your goals. Once you have mastered to do these things, you can accomplish anything you want.

Four Simple Ways to Achieve Any Goals You Set

Sometimes it’s relatively easy to set goals, but the hard part is how to really achieve them. Everyone can set a few goals. It’s no big deal to set some goals, such as, to excercise more, to eat right food, to lose weight, to earn more money, to spend more time with family, to learn more etc. But how many of us can honestly say that we have accomplished all the goals we have set for ourselves? Probably only a very few.

Here are several simple tips that can help you really achieve the goals you want to accomplish.

1. Have a strong reason or purpose

Oftentimes we set goals without thinking too much about them. Are those things really what we want? From deep down, you have to ask yourself if a goal or result is really, really something that YOU want, not influenced by someone else, or society, or cultural backgrounds, etc. That is, in order to have the strong emotional support for achieving your goal, you must find a strong reason(s) to convince youself why you want to accomplish that goal, why it is important to you.

It may help by asking yourself such questions as:

“Why do I want it?”

“Why is it important to me?”

“What if I don’t achieve it, why does it matter?”

“What difference does it make if I indeed achieved it?”

By having true answers to these questions that you totally believe in, you will have a solid emotional foundation upon which to lanuch your steps toward actually achieving your goal.

2. Find a meaningful measurement for your goal

One of the common reasons we don’t get to accomplish our goal is because we sometimes get frustrated and disappointed when things don’t go the way we expected. We tend to lose heart and eventually stop trying. A simple and effective solution to this problem is to find a meaningful and realistic measurement for your goal, so that you will know that you are always making progress, no matter what actual results you get.

For example, your goal may be to start a home business to support yourself. Now one thing you can use for measuring your progress is how many tasks or things that you do that moves you forwards on your goal, regardless of whether or not the result of that task or thing turns out to be successful.

Back to the example, you may have researched 3 business ideas, made 5 phone calls to people to seek advice. Even though none of the ideas turns out to be workable, none of calls turns out to be of any help, you ARE still making progress. Because you have done 8 things (5 biz ideas and 5 calls) that moved you forward, and that’s progress, regardless of their actual results.

To accomplish anything worthwhile means experiencing many small successes and failures along the way. So long as you keep going, keep trying, keep making progress, keep working on your goal, you will eventually achieve your goal. It’s that simple.

3. Focus on spending enough time required on your goals

A common pitfall that we tend to fall into is that we don’t spend enough time required by the goal. We tend to underestimate the amount of time it takes to accomplish something we really want. Otherwise we probably wouldn’t have set the goal in the first place if we thought it’d be so hard to accomplish.

We are not quite sure how long it usually takes someone like us to accomplish something similar to what we want to achieve. Until we know, we tend to get impatient when things don’t seem to happen fast enough. We tend to lose heart when we don’t see the results sooner enough. Eventually this kind of impatient state of mind will sabotage our goal.

So if you want to accomplish something but don’t know how long it usually takes other people to do it, go and do some research, get some answers so that you will have a realistic idea. For example, if you want to make one million dollars, go ask people who have done it, how long it took them. Also remember to ask how much time they worked daily on average and the total amount of time they worked until the goal is accomplished.

4. Form a habit of reviewing your goals and plans daily

One thing that can ensure the realization of your goal is to be consistent. You must put consistent effort into doing the action steps that yield the results required by your goal. One simple way to do this, is to form a habit of reviewing your goals and plans everyday. The important thing is to make this into a habit, so that you will never have to remember, to even think about it. Therefore you will never be easily sidetracked.

It usually requires a little effort to form any habit at the first, but once the habit is formed, then you are all set. Try a 30-day habit forming plan. Each day for the next 30 days, force yourself to find time to review your goals and action steps, think about them, and reflect how you’re doing with them, and what you need to do next. Stick to this plan for 30 days, I can assure you that after 30 days, you will do this everyday without having to remind yourself.

We all want to accomplish something that’s important, that matters to ourselves. But we won’t be able to do that without a game plan. By following above mentioned steps, we will always have a plan, something to support us, something to keep us going when things get tough, and eventually we will accomplish any goals we set.
